Our New Building
Before the update, let’s look at a brief overview of what NEMO AAA offers. We help older Missourians maintain and regain their independence. Some of our essential services include housing, disease prevention, transportation, legal services, employment, and a few more. These extended services are offered to older adults living across 16 countries.
Returning to the big announcement, we have purchased the old Maritz building on North Baltimore Street in Kirksville and moved to our new office building on February 5, 2024. We planned this move to expand our services in the upcoming months. Our primary goal is to become a one-stop shop for seniors.
We’ve experienced quite the upgrade from our old building. Now, on our new premises, we have the space for activities such as a welcoming communal dining area, a state-of-the-art wellness center, an expansive commercial kitchen area, ample dry goods storage, and additional offices for our growing team.
Our executive director, Debbie Blessing, told KTVO, “We would like to bring some of our partners out here, so we have more of an opportunity to provide one-stop shopping. We partner with people who help fill out applications for benefits.”
When we speak about the benefits, Medicare and tax-break programs are to be included in our services. To make this happen, we are partnering with NEMO Senior Services.
She also informed KTVO that one of NEMO AAA’s other goals is to cultivate a sense of community among the elderly living in Adair County. She stated, “This just opens up the opportunity for more people to come and enjoy the congregate meal setting and get some socialization. There will be lots of activities.” Although it will be quite some time until all the renovations are complete, we are excited about what’s to come. Stop by to see us at our new location at 2815 N Baltimore Street in Kirksville.
Update on Town Hall
The United States Census Bureau forecasts a historic change by 2034, with older adults expected to outnumber children for the first time. In Missouri, seniors comprise 22.88% of the population, projected to exceed 25% in the next decade.
The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, along with the Missouri Association of Area Agencies on Aging, is initiating the planning process by organizing town halls throughout the state. These gatherings aim to understand the diverse needs and perspectives of Missourians from all walks of life as they share insights on aging gracefully.
Regarding the initiative, we hosted a town hall in Monroe City on February 29, 2024. Our executive director emphasized that this town hall was to give residents a chance to have their voices heard and their concerns addressed. You can visit this website for any feedback regarding the initiative.
As mentioned above, we at NEMO AAA have plans to expand our services and make the livelihoods of our residents comfortable and independent. Contact us to learn more about our services.
